Liverpool Manchester City

An obstacle ever so familiar to Liverpool is back- will they finally overcome it?

Almost every football fan around the globe is aware of the events on April 10th.

Liverpool face familiar foes Manchester City, with the pair having their closest title race since the 2018/19 season. Even then, since 2018, it has been one or the other topping the league table, or finishing runners-up, except for 2021, and that was due to Liverpool’s unanimous injury crisis at the back. The last time they had such a crucial game was in 2019, at the same venue and against the same opponents, in the 18/19 season.

What has changed since 2018/19?

Now, Liverpool are back- and its not the same machine City will be facing.

Liverpool have let go of Gini Wijnaldum, Dejan Lovren and Xherdan Shaqiri from their title winning squad of 2020- and have signed Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago, Diogo Jota, Ibou Konate and crucially, Luis Diaz.

It’s not the same system either compared to the last time they had to meet Manchester City in a game this big- at the Etihad at the start of 2019.

Jurgen Klopp has consistently insisted on a high line since their Champions League triumph, and this season, as been using Liverpool’s right hand midfielder as a Mezzala, or a more ‘extreme’ box-to-box midfielder.

Liverpool’s woes at the Etihad- could it be changed?

At the Etihad, Liverpool have lost to Manchester City by an aggregate of 7-3 since 2018/19. And that’s just sugarcoating it- Klopp’s men have lost 13-4 on aggregate since Pep’s reign.

They’ve:

  • Drawn 1-1 in the 16/17 season
  • Lost 5-0 in the 17/18 season
  • Lost 2-1 in the 18/19 season
  • Lost 4-0 in the 19/20 season
  • Drawn 1-1 in the 20/21 season

At the Etihad. Crucially, the context of all the games were slightly in Manchester City’s favor:

  • 16/17- Both Klopp and Pep still adapting to the PL
  • 17/18- Down to 10 men, Liverpool defense wasn’t as solid compared to now
  • 18/19- Goal line clearance, Sane consistently turning it on against Liverpool but has now left City
  • 19/20- The week after Liverpool’s 30 year title drought ended, lack of focus in the City game
  • 20/21- Loss of Virgil van Dijk, as well as a rare switch to the 4-2-3-1 by Klopp due to Jota’s good form.

So is it possible they can finally end their pain at the Etihad?

They can, but it’s not going to be easy.

For the first time in a while as of current circumstances, Liverpool have a fit squad. It is likely their XI is better than Manchester City’s, but the depth City have is phenomenal and is what pushes them to the PL title on most occasions.

Potential Starting Lineups?

Aha. Now that’s something which is a lot easier to determine.

In Liverpool’s squad, the strongest defence and midfield are easy to determine.

But with the signing of Luis Diaz, things get tricky. Liverpool tend to have a few attackers who easily lose the ball such as Diogo Jota, and Sadio Mane’s first touch has seem to have left him.

Liverpool Starting XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Firmino, Diaz

As for Manchester City, it’s likely they’ll stick to the same lineup as the reverse fixture. With De Bruyne in hot form, its impossible for him to be dropped, as well as the dribbling prowess of Bernado Silva. The question is whether Ruben Dias is available.

Manchester City Starting XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo; De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva; Foden, Grealish, Sterling

It’s going to be a crazy game, that’s all I can say. Not going to predict the match as I support Liverpool unfortunately!

The Quadruple is imminent, yet a long journey for Klopp’s Liverpool

Liverpool are about to have one of their most season-defining months in their history.

Actually, that’s quite the understatement.

It could be one of their most iconic run of games in their history. Jurgen Klopp’s men are still participating in all competitions being a point (69) behind Manchester City (70) in the Premier League, as well as in the FA Cup Semi-Finals, where they face Pep Guardiola’s men in order to reach their second final this season. One can’t forget the elusive Champions League trophy, and Liverpool are no stranger to it- aiming to win their 7th CL trophy in their history this campaign.

[Credit: The Mirror] Jurgen Klopp faces one of the most challenging months in his managerial career, which could prove crucial for the club’s history.

Liverpool’s Run of Games:

  • Watford (H, PL)
  • Benfica (A, UCL)
  • Manchester City (A, PL)
  • Benfica (H, UCL)
  • Manchester City (N, FA Cup)
  • Manchester United (H, PL)
  • Everton (H, PL)
  • Bayern Munich/Villarreal (H, UCL)
  • Newcastle (A, PL)

*Liverpool will need to proceed to the UCL Semi-Finals first, before playing Bayern or Villarreal.

Having eight games in 60 days is normal for a club without European football, and having around 11-12 games in 60 days, or 5-6 games in a month is standard in modern football for clubs playing European football.

Liverpool have 8 to 9 games this month alone.

It pretty much depicts the relentless schedule in modern football, and as previously stated- a challenging month for any football team.

Questions were asked of this Liverpool team at the start of the season and whether they can scrape top 4- let alone the quadruple, especially with depth not as strong as the likes of Manchester City.

With the new weapon of Luis Diaz, as well as the addition of exuberant youth such as Harvey Elliot, Liverpool’s squad depth has really been one of their positives since the start of the calendar year- the increased competition for Sadio Mane’s LW spot, or even using his versatility is how an extra player in Luis Diaz has affected this team.

Ultimately, its going to come down to Klopp’s rotation- is it possible to field the likes of Kostas Tsimikas, Owen Beck, or even an out-of-form Oxlade-Chamberlain in the FA Cup? Yes.

Is it possible start these players against Manchester City however? Well, other than Kostas Tsimikas, it is quite difficult for the Ox and an inexperienced RB to start against the PL champions. It’s how smartly Klopp will rotate.

At the same time, Liverpool fans- enjoy the ride. It’s quite likely there won’t be such a unique month (other than May if Liverpool are in all competitions) in our history, ever. More importantly, enjoy Klopp’s reign- 2024 isn’t that far away.

๐Ÿ’ธ Transfer News (January 2022)

The January transfer window is in full swing as the first 7 days of the window have not disappointed- yet there have been some unexpected moves for some players.

Here’s the main summary of the main deals (and the main rumours)

Lorenzo Insigne

Lorenzo Insigne agrees deal with Toronto FC, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

In one of the more unexpected moves in the transfer window, Lorenzo Insigne has made a switch over the continent, moving from his beloved Napoli to Toronto FC in the MLS.

The 30-year-old Italian, who has spent 10 years at Napoli (3 on loan from Napoli, 7 playing for the club), has amassed 319 appearances and scored 89 goals, has become the highest-paid MLS player of all time.

He will spend 6 more months at Napoli, then move to the Canadian-based club in the summer, as a free agent.

Kieran Trippier

The English Right-Back has signed for the Magpies.

Kieran Trippier, who has constantly been linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid since the start of his stint, has moved back to England- but not to the club you would have expected.

He was linked to Manchester United or a return to Tottenham Hotspur but has now signed for the richest club in the world, and is the first signing of their project of getting back to title contenders, but for now trying to survive relegation.

His medical has been completed and all the Geordie’s need to wait for is the official announcement from the club.

Sloppy, Poor: Liverpool end unbeaten streak at London Stadium

Disclaimer: I support Liverpool so my takes could be too reactionary or not make sense to neutrals/rival fans.

Liverpool travelled to the London Stadium as they were to play in-form West Ham, who were sitting fourth in the table. In an end-to-end game, West Ham emerged as 3-2 winners in what was a lackluster display from Jurgen Klopp’s men as it ended a 25-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. Here are some talking points from the match:

CategoryWest HamLiverpool

ScorersAlisson 4′ (OG)
Fornals 67′
Zouma 74′
Alexander Arnold 41′
Origi 83′
Statistics in the match. Looked like Liverpool dominated but WHU executed their gameplan perfectly

Where was the midfield?

This has been a problem for Liverpool all season. With Klopp tweaking the system, the Right Centre Mid contributes to the attack as Trent and Salah form a triangle with Jordan Henderson in this case. However, with Henderson contributing to the attack, he is unable to track back to support a free right-flank when teams hit Liverpool on the counter attack, with Matip having to deal in 2 vs 1 situations as van Dijk is occupied with the left hand side. It felt like there was a midfield hole in defensive terms as Fabinho was the only player who could provide midfield stability. This wasn’t in just the West Ham game. Brentford and Brighton were able to break down Liverpool’s midfield with little difficulty. Something Klopp has to work on in the international break, and FSG are also partly to blame in not replace Wijnaldum who provided defensive stability.

Set-pieces, Lack of heart and the Left-Back debate

2 of West Ham’s goals were from corners.

The first goal was debatable, as it was given as an Alisson Own Goal despite elbowing on the hand from Ogbonna, who eventually went out injured.

However, Zouma is unmarked on the second goal, and Alisson is once again pre-occupied with three burly players surrounding him, and the centre-backs don’t do much of it. Corners were exposed and West Ham took the best opportunities from them.

West Ham win five-goal thriller to end Liverpool's unbeaten run and underline top-four credentials
Zouma heads in West Ham’s third

From what I saw of the match, West Ham in the second half had so much more spirit, energy, and passion compared to Liverpool. One West Ham player could outmuscle three Liverpool Players.

Lastly, the curious case of Andrew Robertson and the calls for him to be dropped to the bench as a starting Left-Back. It is interesting, as in the past few games Robertson has only made overlapping runs and his crosses, at times, were unable to beat the first man.

Kostas Tsimikas is breathing down his neck and considering Liverpool have a clean sheet in all the games he’s played in, I’m not saying Liverpool will have clean sheets in every game he plays, but he is better offensively and on-par with Robertson defensively.

With Robertson playing all 38 games last season, as well as international breaks and the EUROs, he’s been run into the ground with all that sprinting and needs a 4 to 5 game rest at minimum until he feels energetic again.

Tottenham could have just turned their season around ๐Ÿ˜ณ

In a shocking turn of events, Tottenham have sacked Nuno Espirito Santo after their 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Manchester United after less than 5 months in charge of the London faithful.

While it looked like Ole might have won ‘El Sackico’, Tottenham’s next decision could ultimately prove costly to the Red Devils.

Tottenham are in advanced negotiations with recent Serie A winner Antonio Conte, who previously won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017.

It is also ironic in the sense that Tottenham approached the Italian just three months ago before they hired Nuno, and the fact that they re-approached Conte again in such a short timeframe would be rather uncommon in the footballing world.

Reliable Journalist Di Marzio confirms Antonio Conte is close to signing a two-year deal with Spurs.

Conte will sign on a two year deal, with speculations that there would be an option to extend his tenure by an extra year. Manchester United fans would feel the most infuriated by his appointment, considering they recently lost 5-0 to their arch rivals and Conte apparantly being open to taking the helm at Old Trafford had Solksjaer been sacked.

It makes the league even more competitive with Tottenham joining the top 4 race, and Manchester United could be the ones making the way knowing their inconsistency.

PL table after 10 games, with Conte’s former team Chelsea 3 points clear of Liverpool.

Italy win EURO 2020

Yes, I’m aware I’m one week late to the party.

Italy broke English hearts as they won on penalties to lift the EURO 2020 trophy at Wembley.

Italy win EURO 2020: the moment Chiellini lifts the trophy - video - Football Italia
Chiellini lifts the EURO 2020 trophy, just 3 years after World Cup qualification heartbreak in 2018.

It was a night filled with tension, expectation and anticipation met from both sets of fans.

England started on the brighter side however, as Luke Shaw started and finished a counter- attack in sublime style after diverting Kieran Trippier’s cross past Donnarumma, kickstarting scenes of jubilation at Wembley.

While Italy were presented with more opportunities in the remaining 43 minutes of the first half, they lacked the cutting edge in the final third which was ever so needed in an important International match like this.

Italy came flying off the blocks in the second half however, as they created and missed a multitude of chances, until their iconic centre-half Leonardo Bonnuci stepped up.

Insigne’s corner was flicked on to the near post for Verrati who managed to head it toward goal, but Pickford managed to claw the header against the post. However, Chiellini pounced on the lose ball and managed to grab the equalizer, sparking scenes of ecstasy and pandemonium in the Italian crowd.

After a dull yet nervy exchange in extra-time, the game was to be decided by the nail-biting penalty shootout which England had a poor record at, especially in major tournaments.

Both Dominico Berardi and Harry Kane score their first penalties, before Andrea Belotti missed Italy’s second.

Harry Maguire then thumped the ball into the top-right corner to give England a 2-1 lead on penalties.

That was before Bonucci score Italy’s third, and Rashford’s effort from the spot hit the post.

Bernadeschi scored the fourth penalty for Italy, but Jadon’s Sancho had minimal power and wasn’t high enough such that Donnarumma was able to dive to his left to give Italy the 3-2 advantage on penalties.

Jorginho could have scored the decisive penalty but Pickford managed to save it, meaning 19-year old Bukayo Saka, in England’s most decisive sporting moment, stepped up.

It didn’t matter that he missed and won the EUROs for Italy- but his bravery and endurance to take the most decisive penalty, in front of more than 60 000 people at Wembley, and more than a million people watching from home.

He has a good career ahead of him and should he continue and persist with what he does best, he could become a star for Arsenal, which is something the club needs in their dire state.

Congratulations to Italy, but praise should go to Saka.

No Magic; Martinez the hero- talking points from the Copa America Final

The Copa America Final was contested by two of South America’s powerhouses- Brazil and Argentina. Held at the famous Maracanรฃ stadium in Rio de Janeiro, it promised to be a fiesty contest. In the end, Argentina won 1-0 courtesy of a Di Maria chip which was from a sublime Rodrigo de Paul pass. The hot topic after the final was about Messi winning his first international trophy, but here are 2 more talking points from the Copa America final:

ABSENT MESSI

Lionel Messi misses a huge chance in the 89th minute

Before the final, or even before a major international story, the narrative would always be Lionel Messi carrying the burden of the Argentina national team.

Whether it was his hattrick against Colombia to send Argentina to the 2018 World Cup, or his 9 goal contributions in 5 matches in this tournament, Messi nearly always delivers for Argentina.

However, today was probably one of his worst days wearing the blue and white-striped jersey. He wasn’t involved in much of Argentina’s play, and squandered a huge chance to double his nation’s lead in the dying moments of the match. However, this could be due to the fact that he was nursing a hamstring injury throughout the match.

However, this was the day that the narrative of Messi and Argentina turned on his head, as Argentina as a unit were sublime.

They didn’t play free-flowing, attacking football, but they stuck to their principles and had faith in Lionel Scaloni, who has proven to be a mircale worker thus far for Argentina.

The likes of Emiliano Martinez, who was a menace in goal, as well as the energy and stamina or Rodrigo de Paul in midfield, allowed Argentina to play as they would have liked to even with their star player staying quiet throughout the match. Di Maria’s antics can’t be forgotten as well, as he managed to calmly slot past Ederson to score the winning goal for La Albiceleste.

But ultimately, that all doesn’t matter, for Messi’s 16 years of hurt for Argentina is officially over.

BRAZILIAN BLUNDER

Neymar left in TEARS as Brazil lose the Copa America final before laughing with Messi | Daily Mail Online
Neymar is devastated after Brazil lose to Argentina in the Copa America Final

This wasn’t Brazil’s finest hour.

Other than Neymar constantly trying to give Brazil a chance, their attackers were sloppy and were mostly nullified by the Argentinian defence.

Their performance was summed up when Thiago Silva sloppily gave away a corner after a mispass.

Other than the 6 minutes of pressure in the early second half (where Richarlison scored a goal ruled out for offside), Brazil were sloppy and despite having more of the ball, they were unable to make full use of their possession.

Many fans have also questioned manager Tite, namely Fred starting over Fabinho as well as Richarlison, who hasn’t had the best of seasons, starting over Roberto Firmino, a big game player in 20/21, despite the two having similar goal contributions last season.

It’s been a letdown for Brazil fans and hopefully they can recover from this loss as they have experience at the back and an exciting, flamboyant and youthful attack.

Sancho to United, France out- big stories this week

It was an eventful week in the football world, as the EUROs had its final 16 spar off against each other along with transfer talk.

FRANCE STUNNED, SPAIN SCORE 5EURO R16 ROUNDUP

The most memorable moment this week came in the form of France imploding in the EUROs.

The favorites to win the competition, France found themselves a goal behind after 13 minutes when Haris Seferovic headed in to give Switzerland the lead.

Ricardo Rodriguez could have doubled the Swiss’s lead but missed a crucial penalty, allowing France to turn the tie on its head after Benzema scored two in four minutes.

Paul Pogba looked to have sealed the tie after he scored a screamer from 25 yards out but the Swiss had other ideas.

Seferovic scored his second with 9 minutes left on the clock to make it 3-2 to the French before Gavranovic equalised in the final minute of normal time, breaaking French hearts and kickstarting jubilant scenes among the Switzerland fans.

There was still time for Kingsley Coman to hit the bar four-minutes into stoppage time. Both teams went into extra time and still couldn’t be separated, so the match went into a nail-biting penalty shootout.

With the Penalty Shootout score at 5-4 to Switzerland, wonderkid Kylian Mbappe stepped up to take the 5th penalty to equalise the Penalty Shootout score but ultimately failed as Sommer dived to his right and managed to save Mbappe’s penalty as France imploded.

Things have only gotten more sour after the match as there have been rumours over a lack of unision in the French squad and egos clashing with each other, and even the parents of the French players have clashed as Rabiot’s mother was bickering over Mbappe’s penalty miss to Mbappe’s father.

It will be interesting to see whether Deschamps can bring back the unity in the French squad, or they implode in the 2022 WC and get knocked out in the group stage (Champions curse).

While Croatia also managed to come back from 3-1 down to equalise courtesy of a Mario Pasilic goal in stoppage time, it proved to null and void as Alvaro Morata, who has received abuse recently for being unable to score the easiest of chances, scored Spain’s fourth and Real Sociedad star Mikel Oyarzabal made it 5 before half time of extra time, as Spain ran out 5-3 winners.

Ukraine stunned Sweden who topped their group after a last minute 121st winner in stoppage time, while England managed to navigate through Germany and win 2-0, as Muller and Werner missed big chances for the Germans. Portugal were also hard done by after a 1-0 loss to Belgium despite the Portuguese being the better outfit throughout the match. Czechia stunned 10-men Netherlands, and Italy squeezed past a resilient Austria side, winning 2-1 after extra-time. Finally, Denmark humiliated Wales 4-0 as Harry Wilson, the Liverpool youngster, got sent off for Wales.

Jadon Sancho is officially a Manchester United player.

Manchester United confirm the signing of Jadon Sancho

An 18-month saga has finally come to an end, as Man Utd have bought Jadon Sancho for 73 Million Pouds, which is a bargain comparing Dortmund’s initial fee of 120 million pounds.

Him a Rashford could be a deadly duo down the flanks, and with a good CB and a CDM, there is the scary possibility that United might win the league again.

Harry Kane’s transfer saga- Analysis

KANE’S 20/21 SEASON WITH TOTTENHAM

Harry Kane ended the 20/21 season as the top scorer and top assister in the Premier League. In an average Tottenham team that finished 7th despite mounting a title challenge at the start of the season, he has been one of the few positives in Tottenham’s chaotic season.

He scored from almost all of the chances he was presented with. In Mourinho’s defensive system, he and Son-Heung Min were a dyanmic duo and the two were the main scorers for Tottenham Hotspur.

THE CLUB KANE WAS DESTINED FOR

However, Kane wanted more. He didn’t like the way his career and the direction that Spurs were going. In the latter weeks of the Premier League season, Sky Sports reported that Harry Kane wanted to leave Tottenham, and had informed Chairman Daniel Levy of his intentions. While there were a plethora of clubs linked with him, the one club he was always destined to play for was Manchester City. Fitting well in Pep’s 4-3-3 system, he would be City’s First-choice Striker and his role would be cemented knowing that Sergio Aguero recently left the club- scoring goals and linking up the play, which is what Harry Kane does.

Should Harry Kane join the Cityzens, he would be perfect for Pep Guardiola’s system.

LESS COMPETITION; MAN CITY’S ADVANTAGE IN THE PL

While Kane moving to City would be a match made in heaven, it would spell disaster for the competitiveness of the Premier League. With the quality not only in City’s first team, but on their bench and reserve team, the likes of Liverpool and even Chelsea will be unable to match Manchester City’s incredible squad depth. Even without a proper striker last season, they managed to utilize a 4-3-3 False 9 formation and win the Premier League and even reach their first UCL final. In their 2-0 Semi-Final win over PSG (Second Leg), the value of City’s bench was an expensive 449 Million Euros. To have Harry Kane, Jesus, Torres, Sterling, Mahrez, Foden and Bernado Silva consisting as their attack proves that they have increadible squad depth, allowing them to constantly rotate and reducing their fitness issues, along with the quality of their second team.

As Jose Mourinho put it (Before the 19/20 season): “Only 4 teams can win the EPL. Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Man City’s B team”.

However, something positive has to be paired up with something negative. And that negative is the transfer saga affecting Harry Kane

HARRY KANE BEING AFFECTED?

Before the EUROs, many people were expecting Harry Kane to have a good Campaign. English fans put him as the golden boot winner for the EUROs while most others put him as one of the top 10 goalscorers in the competition at the very minimum.

While England had an easier group compared to the one they were presented with in WC 2018, they have only scored twice, and Kane has not had any goal involvements so far.

Comparing that to WC 2018, Kane scored 5 goals in 3 matches, including a hat trick against Panama. While there is still the knockout rounds in EURO 2021 for Kane to score in, he has not had a good campaign at all.

While it could be due to the heavily criticized Gareth Southgate’s negative tactics, it could also be a mentality shift within Kane. With all the rumous circulating about him he may not be able to focus on the EUROs. According to journalists such as Fabrizio Romano, Daniel Levy has blocked Kane’s move to Man City.

According to journalists like Fabrizio Romano, Daniel Levy is trying to make Harry Kane stay.

However, this could also be due to Tottenham’s difficulty in finding a manger, with talks with Fonseca, Gattuso and Antonio Conte being broken down.

CONCLUSION

City fans would be delighted to see Kane join them, and we as football fans could possibly see his scariest form in a City shirt. However, this could spell disaster for the Premier League as the possibility of a title race could completely be eradicated. The transfer saga could also be affecting Kane which is why he has been underwhelming for the EUROs.

Rampant Leicester stun wounded Liverpool (Informal feelings)

Informal feelings is just me talking from the top of my mind. A bit more informal as the title says it.

Leicester City beat us 3-1 thanks to goals from Maddison, Vardy and Harvey Barnes. Salah however scored a sumptuous goal, equaling the amount of goals he scored in the previous season.

Image result for leicester 3-1 liverpool
Leicester pile more misery on us, and Leipzig next? Perfect.

In a fast-paced game, I felt we were the better team. Liverpool constantly created chances but were slow in the final third. Our defense was pathetic however, with Leicester finding it easy to score on the counter, with 2 of 3 goals coming from the counter.

Alisson was actually ok, before he karate kicked debutant Ozan Kabak, who had a decent debut before the Vardy goal. However, the first goal was offside, and the drew the line from the shoulder. VAR having another masterclass

But honestly, I dont see the side of 19/20. That side which used to grind out results on an off day. Van dijk has affected us massively. Well, just hope we can replicate 2005 where we were bad in the PL and stun everyone in the CL.
