Liverpool cruise past Norwich but problems persist- EPL 19/20 Matchday 1

Virgil Van Dijk, an impassible wall in defence, nets Liverpool’s third from a Mo Salah corner.

Liverpool cruised past newly-promoted Norwich 4-1, with goals from Salah, Origi, Van Dijk adding to an own goal by Norwich captain Grant Hanley.

Salah scored an easy tap-in after a pass from Roberto Firmino, while Van Dijk headed the ball from Salah’s corner. Origi headed a pinpoint Alexander-Arnold pass. Origi’s cross deflected off Hanley’s leg, scoring the own goal.

However, all is not well for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

With almost 40 minutes played, Alisson had a ‘problem with his calf’. He took a goal kick and slipped, “thinking that something had hit his calf,” Klopp said in his post-match Interview. “This definitely tells it is more than a strain, and it is very worrying,” he added.

With new signing Adrian in between the sticks, he did a pretty decent job for his first appearance for the Reds.

He managed to save a free-kick and 2 shots from Norwich, although he failed to keep a clean sheet after conceding a goal scored by striker Teemu Pukki in the second half.

However, there are still concerns for Alisson, who will not be playing in the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea, the Europa League winners. This gives Liverpool a disadvantage- as Alisson is generally their star man during deparate occasions.

In other news…

  • Man City travel to West Ham and try for a third consecutive title
  • Leicester to play a close game with Wolves in their own backyard
  • Old Trafford to see a nail-biting match against Europa league winners Chelsea
  • Tottenham play newly promoted side Aston Villa
  • Arsenal travel to Newcastle in hopes to reach top four with newly signed players such as David Luiz and Nicolas Pepe

Other than Leicester’s title triumph, many other shocking things happened in 2015/16 (Premier League)

With 5000 to 1 odds to win the title, and just escaping relegation the season before, it seemed impossible for the Foxes to win the title. And they did just that. With an amazing manager (at the time) and future stars, they sealed their title with 81 points. The following season, most of their players left for the bigger clubs (Top 6 inn England, mainly to Chelsea).

But that was not the only stunning Episode of the 2015/16 Premier League.

Southampton Qualify for Europa League

The Saints finished last season (2018/19) in 16th, escaping relegation by a mere 5 points. However, just 3 seasons before that, they finished in 6th, qualifying for the Europa League. However, if you compare from previous seasons- it’s actually not a huge surprise- they finished 7th in the 2014/15 season.

Dmitri Payet Hero as West Ham finish 7th

The Hammers finished 7th as Dmitri Payer starred in many of their matches played. He was a steal in the transfer market, brought from Marseille for a sum of £10m. When sold back, he was worth triple the amount West Ham brought him for. Although he left in disgrace, the 2015/16 would remain sweet to him. The Attacking Midfielder scored 9 goals, many of those free-kicks and volleys. One of his best goals was a sublime free-kick against Manchester United in Old Trafford, scoring from 35 yards (32m). Back to West Ham, they ended the season with 62 points, above their average mid-table performance.

Liverpool and Chelsea go down

Liverpool shocked their fans finishing 8th, with 60 points. However, it could have been worse had they not sacked Brenden Rodgers. Before his recuitment, the Reds only gained 12 points in Eight Matches (50% of the maximum points they could have earned). Also, a poor defence caused Liverpool to end the 15/16 season in a disappointing fashion. However, one of their best games to date in that season was a 4-1 win to Man City away.

I think we all know Jose Mourinho’s Season 3 curse. His team always underperforms and he gets the sack, but for his second spell at Chelsea it was one like no other. In 16 games, Chelsea earned only 15 points (31.25% of the Maximum points he could have earned). Its a Jinx, thats all. In the remaining 22 games, Chelsea earned 32 points (48% of the Maximum points they could have earned).

That’s it for now.

PSG’s Neymar Jr has said that he does not want to play for PSG anymore after his injury. We will wait and see where he may go to. Most likely Barcelona.

The president of PSG says that Mbappe will stay at the club and is encouraging him to become more responsible, although he is just 20.

Also, Copa America has started. Argentina are messed up, and Uruguay an Chile started the tournament well.

Buffon leaves PSG, Hazard SHOULD wear no. 7 in Madrid, and more!

Image result for what number will hazard wear at real madrid

Above: Eden Hazard is to wear the number 7 at Madrid.

Buffon has left PSG after 1 season. The champions league still eludes him but his future looks cloudy. Nobody knows his next move. There could be a move to Parma, his boyhood club.

Eden Hazard has joined Madrid for 88 million pounds, the same price tag in which Madrid sold Ronaldo last Summer. Little is known about his number, but people have reportedly seen a no.7 shirt in Madrid’s shops. However, Real Madrid have just announced that the Belgian will be wearing the #7 shirt, forcing Mariano to vacate that spot. With Luka Jovic signed, Madrid put a poor season behind them to compete for the Laliga title again. ( Annoys me as a Barcelona fan )

This means Christian Eriksen may not move to the Bernabau. It was most likely Madrid’s backup plan to sign him if the Hazard deal does not go through. The midfielder is linked to Manchester United but will most likely stay at Tottenham.

Talking about United, they have signed the EPL’s most wanted star- Daniel James. The Swansea Winger has signed for The Red Devils for 80 million pounds, and is Solskjær’s first ever signing for the club.

Why have some penalty goals been disallowed in football?

Image result for disallowed penalty goals in football

Above: Riyad Mahrez’s penalty is disallowed.

Son-Heung Min, Paul Pogba, Even Lionel Messi. These players had disallowed penalties although they scored. But why?

Penalty rules go deep in, although it looks simple.

  1. The goalkeeper CANNOT touch any crossbar using his body. He needs to be facing the kicker, and must be right outside the goal-line. No part of his body should be in the goal-line.
  2.  The players OTHER than the kicker and the goalkeeper must be 10 yards (9.15m) away from the penalty box.
  3. The ball MUST be stationary before the kick is taken. The same goes for the goalpost, crossbar, and goal net.
  4.  If somebody infringes on the laws of the game, this happens:
Solutions on what happens, depending on the circumstance.

Notice that in the 5th row, there is  a section called ‘Illegal feinting’. Feinting is basically a stop-fake. In simple terms, it is faking. Feinting in your run up means to stutter, which is allowed in the laws of football. However, feinting at the end of your run up is wrong. This means you are faking a shot which you are actually not taking. This deliberately gives the kicker an advantage as the keeper would dive, thus allowing them to shoot to the other side. This is an unsporting behavior, thus the ID Free Kick and a yellow.

Netherlands win England to secure Nation League final tie

Netherlands defeated England. It was a dramatic match, but the first 70 minutes of the match was filled with scrappy football and a lot of chances wasted. However, VAR drama kicked in again. De Ligt, who by far had a poor night to give England a penalty, scored a bullet header from the corner of the post. 12 minutes later, Drama kicked in with VAR disallowing a Jesse Lingard goal, ruling his foot offside. Just barely. 2 minutes later, it disallowed a penalty for the Dutch, after they claimed that Ben Chilwell handeled the ball. In 7 minutes of injury time, 4 chances were created, 2 for both sides. Sterling could have grabbed the win but his chip barely went above the bar. An amazing atmosphere, as well.

In extra time, Memphis Depay stole the ball from Harry Maguire, who was right outside the English box. Depay shot. Pickford, stunned, managed a save, luckily. However, the rebound came in and Kyle walker put it into his own net, in an attempt to avoid the other Dutch player scoring. Probably the worst England defence in 4 years. 2 mistakes cost them. 2-1 Netherlands.

After the break, England created some chances but the Dutch had a solid defence in response.

ANOTHER SHAMBOLIC ENGLAND DEFENCE!!!! Kyle Walker throws it in to Ross Barkely, who then intends to pass to Pickford. However, Depay intercepts it, and passes to Quincy Promes to mkae it 3-1 Netherlands! Something like 2017/18 UCL Final, isn’t it? What a sudden twist in events, in 3 seconds in fact.

Full time. Netherlands 3-1 England.

What the heck was that defending? Giving England 2 Dog’s Diners of goals. Disppointment for English fans.

If you do not understand the 2 goals in extra time, watch the highlights. England were dreadful. (In extra time)

Liverpool lift CL for 6th time

In a rather sloppy game, Liverpool won Spurs 2-0 thanks to a second-minute penalty after Mousa Sissoko’s handball after just 30 seconds. Salah converted from the spot. After that, chances were created, but both teams’ finishing was pathetic. I nearly feel to sleep due to most of the first half being played in the middle of the pitch.

Thankfully, a lot more chances were created in the second half, and the game became much more fast-paced. Spurs created more chances ( 16:14 ), but unlike in 2018, Alisson was the hero by saving many shots- including an Eriksen free-kick. Spurs did appeal for a penalty just before that, but Danny Rose was fouled outside the penalty area. 3 minutes later, a Milner corner allowed Divock Origi to score Liverpool’s second, after a gentle Van Dijk header in his direction. Origi’s powerful left-footed shot was enough to double Liverpool’s lead. In the 5 minutes of stoppage time, Spurs created chances for at least a consollation goal. However, Alisson came to Liverpool’s aid.

The game definitely wasn’t the best in this whole season, but it was worth watching.
